Did you work here when you were certified?
Why did you want to become certified?
Having worked in the field for over a decade at that point I felt the need to learn more about my profession and what it stands for.
How did you study?
I read the text book and highlighted key points, and then I prepared study notes and flash cards to use for memorization. I also had a mentor with whom I met a number of times for advice and coaching. Note on the text: it is high on detail and low on inspiration.
How did you find the exam and essay questions?
I found about 10% of the multiple choice questions challenging because I think there are a lot of grey areas in our field. What I would do first in a given situation, might be different from what was in the text, so there were a few questions I really had to ponder over.
What benefits did you find after being certified? Have there been long term ones as well? Any that surprised you?
I learned quite a bit about aspects of the profession that I was hazy on. I leaned much more about the “management” perspective in organizing volunteers. Getting my CVA helped me with how to approach and solve problems and how to plan. I made some distinct changes and additions to my job description and our volunteer program policies and procedures as a result of these fresh perspectives.
Why would you suggest someone get certified?
Working in a job you can get focused on the routines and the perspective of your own organization in relation to volunteerism. Getting certified shows you a bigger perspective. You discover what the profession stands for and after earning your CVA you will be even prouder to be a part of it.
