At long last! We searched high and low (but mostly high) for AVRBC’s Next Top Treasurer and we’re so excited to introduce Vivian Xu. Actually, let’s have her introduce herself in her own words.
How did you get involved at AVRBC? What made you want to join?
I’ve been pretty busy with school and my full time job for the past 6 years. I’m so grateful for everything and just wanted to give back. I’ve always been interested in strategic planning and non-profit operations. Now I finally got some time after work so I want to devote that to volunteerism. I saw the posting on Indeed and thought it would be a great opportunity to get involved.
What is your career background?
I’ve been in the retail industry for about 3 years before moving on to not-for-profit organizations (ALS Society of BC and Vancouver Society of Children’s Centres). I then worked in a holding company (Charlwood Pacific Group) for a year, and went back to non-profit in September (Haro Park Centre)!
What other organizations have you volunteered for?
First United Church is the first place I volunteered at 5 years ago. I was responsible for handing out daily necessities in the shelter as well as working in the thrift store. It was a great experience as I met a lot of amazing people in the downtown eastside with different backgrounds and life experiences. I also volunteered for a couple community centres in Richmond back in 2010.
Why is volunteerism and volunteer management important to you?
The experiences with non-profit organizations really taught me the importance of volunteers. Volunteerism is such a crucial component of the organizations. Not only does it support events throughout the year, but it also contributes to the long-term viability of the organizations. On a personal level, it’s a great way to give back and it gives you chance to meet other people with similar passions.
What you hope to gain from your experience at AVRBC?
Get to know more friends and take on a new role other than my regular job so I can learn more beyond the office and the CPA program that I’m in. I’m very excited to join AVRBC and meet with you!
