The conference opened with remarks from Burnaby’s Mayor Derek Corrigan, and a keynote address from Kathy Corrigan, Burnaby MLA, about the importance of volunteerism as a path for one’s lifework, and the value of the work that our profession does in illuminating that path. A variety of workshops provided delegates with the opportunity to learn about new best practises, hear about innovative projects from around the province, and hone their skills in volunteer management. There was an opportunity to learn about the latest in software and online learning resources geared to the needs of the profession. Day 1 ended with a Drumming Circle which illustrated the importance of balance, and of allowing each voice to be heard individually, and to contribute to the collective whole. As one delegate remarked, "There are so many lessons that we can take away from this drumming session that are directly related to the work that we do." And another delegate: "I don't have an ounce of rhythm & no musical training but this was a blast. Powerful way to end an excellent day!" Day 2 opened with a Global Perspective: an inspiring armchair trip through Sudan and Kenya, Toronto and Vancouver, as William Kolong Pioth told of his journey beginning at age 9 as one of the "Lost Boys" of Sudan, escaping war, experiencing life in a refugee camp, immigrating to Canada, and reuniting with his parents many years later. His work founding and running the Homework Club in South Burnaby and providing humanitarian aid to his homeland was an inspiring highlight of the conference. Day 2 workshops helped develop mentoring skills, creative thinking, and provided tested ideas on how to better involve high skills volunteers. The conference ended with keynote speaker Brock Tully, who took delegates on a cycling tour through the US and Canada, and reminded us that the most effective power tool we have is our heart.
